Guidelines
Prior to the introduction of
an Animal Assisted Therapy/Activity Program, we advise the facility to ensure
that the following basic standards are in place.
Handlers in the organisation should have documentary proof available at all times to show that all measures have been taken to ensure that
the dogs do not pose a health threat to the residents i.e. Annual Veterinary
Certification, Parasite control.
Handler and dog teams should have been screened and assessed for suitability for
therapy work. Ongoing training is essential.
Dogs that have been trained to react aggressively or actually bite in specific
situations are NOT suitable and should not be accepted in a facility wishing to
introduce an AAT/AAA Program.
All Therapy Dog Organisations should have Animal Assisted Therapy/Activity
policies and procedures available should the facility wish to see them.
Standards should be in place whereby the handler and dog team should always be
appropriately dressed and identifiable. Dogs should be clean and groomed.
The Organisation should have public liability insurance covering all handler and
dog teams.
A
visit schedule should be provided with the assurance that the facility will be
notified if a visit is to be cancelled.
It
would be an advantage if the organisation is registered and have approval at
government level e.g. Dept. of Health.
References from other facilities where the program is in places would be
advisable.
Any Organisation wishing to start a visiting schedule should be prepared to give
a long-term commitment to the program once it is introduced.
